3 Steps To Defining Your Personal Style

The first part of creating a minimalist wardrobe is to take the time to analyze and find your personal style. Having a wardrobe anchored around your personal style will link all your items together, and keep you happy for decades.

With these 3 easy steps, defining your personal style is easier than you think.

So where do you start? Read through these 3 steps now. Your minimalist wardrobe is waiting.

The first step is to pinpoint your top 3 – 5 style icons. Maybe they’re celebrities or fashion bloggers, or even your friends or coworkers. These should be people with style that you aspire to have, and would feel confident in whatever they are wearing. So gather some inspiration from blogs, magazines and pinterest, and save every image of your top style icons that speaks to you in some way.

Now it’s time to evaluate your top style icons. This is the most important part of the whole process: turning a random selection of saved images into a logical personal style. Go through every image and figure out why it inspired you. Was it the color? Material? Silhouette? Something else? Then, write down your answers to these questions:

  • What are your key textures and materials? (e.g. lightweight fabrics, leather, soft cotton, lace, wool, etc.)
  • What is your overall color scheme? (e.g. monochrome, bright accents, pastels, jewel tones, neutrals, etc.)
  • Which are your key silhouettes? (e.g. skinny jeans + chunky sweaters, a-line skirts + cop tops, maxi dresses + platform heels, etc.)
  • What are your signature items? (e.g. crew-neck sweaters, flared dark-wash jeans, etc.)
  • What words would you use to describe your style? (e.g. classic, chic, edgy, 90s-inspired, bohemian, etc.)

The last step is to try out your newly defined personal style, and make tweaks as necessary. It’s okay for your personal style to change over time as your perspectives and preferences evolve. My personal style has certainly changed over the years, and I expect it to continue to evolve as I grow older and experience new things.

Right now, my personal style is summed up in two words: “effortless chic.” For the most part, I want classic, chic, well-made pieces that fit great, feel good and allow me to move about with confidence and ease. I pay attention to trends, but only incorporate them when they feel right. I only wear black, white and grey; focusing on mixing interesting textures and shapes rather than bright look-at-me colors. Some people call this the ‘model off duty’ style.

Here is how I answered the above questions:

  • What are your key textures and materials? Leather, cotton, wool
  • What is your overall color scheme? Muted color palette of blacks, whites and grays with the occasional denim, and a few neutrals
  • Which are your key silhouettes? Skinny jeans + chunky sweaters + ankle boots
  • What are your signature items? Ankle boots
  • What words would you use to describe your style? Effortless, chic

Enjoy your new personal style!
